Best known as lead singer and co-guitarist with the much underrated Mother Hips, Tim Bluhm has just released the solo The Soft Adventure/Colts (actually two albums merged together). It shows a different side of Bluhm as he explores the art of finely-crafted songs, from the polished, Brian Wilson-like tones of "Spying On Your Teen" through the more reflective "The Only Solution," a stark ballad that has hints of Gene Clark. The disc has 22 cuts that skirt comfortably across the singer/songwriter genre, with ragged confidence merging vulnerability with sensitivity and evocative lyrics. This is a gem of an album with a rich tapestry of lyrical imagery set to an endearing country-rock meets alt-country backdrop.
